Some Great Dad Songs
January 22, 2010
These songs are new to me. I heard the first one in a Subway and the second while coming back from a men’s meeting. I hope you’re reminded again about what’s most important.
While I’m thinking about it, we ought to put together a Familyman Best Dad Songs list. Got any?

I have two – one of which was mentioned by lyrics above by Phillips, Craig and Dean – “I wanna be Just Like You” I sang that at our church years ago for Father’s Day and had a real hard time making it through the whole song.
The other is by George Strait, :Love without End” the chorus goes, “Lt me tell you a secret, about a father’s love. a secret that my daddy said was just between us. You see Daddy’s don’t just love their children every now and then. It’s a Love without end, amen.”
The last verse is “Last night I dreamed I died and stood outside those pearly gates.
And suddenly I realized there must be some mistake.
If they know half the things I’ve done they’ll never let me in.
Then somewhere from the other side, I heard those words again.
They said Let me tell you a secret, about a Father’s love….”
There is no greater love than THE Father’s Love!

Here is a country song I heard a couple of months ago called “The Dollar” by Jamey Johnson
Daddy hugs his little man says son I’ve got to go and he pulls out of the drive and disappears
as they walk back in the house the young boy asks his mama where does daddy go when he leaves here
mama tells her little man your daddy’s got a job and when he goes to work they pay him for his time well the young boy gets to thinking and he heads up to his bedroom and comes running back with a quarter and four dimes
and says mama how much time will this buy me is it enough to take me fishing or throw a football in the street if I’m a little short then how much more does daddy need to spend some time with me
the young boy tells his mama now I know daddy’s busy cause most times when he gets home it’s dark outside but tell him I’ve got me some pennies saved up from the tooth fairy and I keep ‘em in my piggy bank and I believe there’s thirty-five
and mama how much time will that buy me is it enough to take me camping in a tent down by the creek if I’m a little short then how much more does daddy need to spend some time with me
mama how much time will this buy me is it enough for just an afternoon a day or a whole week if I’m a little short then how much more does daddy need to spend some time with me
mama takes her little man sets him on her lap
and starts dialing up some numbers on the phone she says daddy come home early you don’t have to chase that dollar cause your little man has got one here at home

Here is the how not to do it dad song by Harry Chapin called “Cat’s in the Cradle.”
My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talkin’ ‘fore I knew it, and as he grew
He’d say “I’m gonna be like you dad
You know I’m gonna be like you”
And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin’ home dad?
I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then son
You know we’ll have a good time then
My son turned ten just the other day
He said, “Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let’s play
Can you teach me to throw”, I said “Not today
I got a lot to do”, he said, “That’s ok”
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said, “I’m gonna be like him, yeah
You know I’m gonna be like him”
And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin’ home son?
I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then son
You know we’ll have a good time then
Well, he came home from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
“Son, I’m proud of you, can you sit for a while?”
He shook his head and said with a smile
“What I’d really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please?”
And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin’ home son?
I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then son
You know we’ll have a good time then
I’ve long since retired, my son’s moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, “I’d like to see you if you don’t mind”
He said, “I’d love to, Dad, if I can find the time
You see my new job’s a hassle and kids have the flu
But it’s sure nice talking to you, Dad
It’s been sure nice talking to you”
And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He’d grown up just like me
My boy was just like me
And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin’ home son?
I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then son
You know we’ll have a good time then

The name of the Phillips Craig & Dean song is “I WANT TO BE JUST LIKE YOU” and it is totally awesome, it should be the theme song for fathering boys. I think I cried the first time I heard it because I was a new father and it just totally fit the desire of my heart to be the best dad I could be.

Has anyone heard “Father To Son” by Phil Collins? With 3 boys of my own, I especially like this one. In those times when I am not being very patient with my boys, I listen to this for a quick reminder. This is a fairly obscure song, but a favorite of mine. You can find this song on the CD, “…But Seriously”.

These are all great but one that really touches my heart is The Best Day from George Strait, especially the last verse. http://new.music.yahoo.com/george-strait/tracks/best-day—4547893
